A Brief History on Me

I began my education straight out of high school at the University of Hard Knocks. I took classes such as Paying Rent 101, Fundamentals of Budgeting, Minimum Wage Analysis, and Shortcomings of No Degree. After a few years of getting a priceless education I decided to pursue one that money could buy. When I was a kid I use to say, “When I grow up I want to make stuff.” Years later after taking student loans and chasing a childhood dream I’m here to make some stuff with you.

The Pursuant Group Plano, Texas – February 2008 - November 2008

At The Pursuant group I worked as a web developer and copywriter. Some days I was geeking out and banging out weird little symbols and numbers that resulted in pretty web pages, while on other days I was writing scripts, headlines (subject lines), and body email copy. Considering that our clients were non-profit organizations like universities, fraternities, sororities, churches, and others, the great challenge was more about trying to convince a college student to donate their beer money for a better cause. Now that requires some strategy.
Denton County Web Designer Denton, Texas – 2005 - 2006

Updating and maintaining approximately 80 Denton County intra-sites and about the same number of public home sites. The big lesson learned from this job is that good pay solves many problems, but it won’t make me happy. The happiness came through the creative process of building graphic information sites for the Denton County community. That’s what got me out of bed every morning.
Kiwifruit Pack Houses Kiwifruit Packer Tauranga, NZ – 2002 -2003

While traveling the north island of New Zealand and working in kiwifruit pack houses, I learned that in the states we refer to a kiwifruit as a kiwi, which is technically a bird. The national bird of New Zealand. There were countless laughs at my expense when mentioning that I loved to eat kiwis rather than kiwifruit. The natives of New Zealand aren’t too keen on people who want to eat their national bird. In this humorous lesson I also learned the importance of research. It might just be a good idea to know a little bit about a country before traveling to it.
Hewlett Packard Tech Support Dallas, Texas – 2000 – 2002

Providing computer technical support via the telephone is complex, but it was more about damage control. Most times the problem was due to a short between the user and the keyboard. However, a less insulting and more objective approach came through the use of empathy and encouragement. This tact proved to be the best solution to many problems. In this position I learned how to educate without letting the caller know that he or she was being educated.
Craft of Wood Fantasia Cabinet Craftsman Mesquite, Texas – 1997- 2000

When building custom cabinets it’s important to always measure twice and cut once. There’s great satisfaction that comes with crafting an amazing piece of furniture or cabinetry by hand. Aside from walking away with all my fingers, I also took with me the understanding that anything I create has a piece of me in it.
T.GI. Friday’s Server Mesquite, Texas – 1992 - 1997

After five years of waiting tables the most valuable experience that I took with me was the insight in knowing
that everyone can be pleased through creativity. Even the most cranky and hungry people alive can be wowed. I was never told in training to go to a grocery store and purchase an item for a customer if we didn’t carry it. I was told to do what ever I had to do to give my guest a wonderful experience. Besides, what possible consequence could come from a customer writing a letter to corporate? Awards? OK, I’ll take ‘em.
